TERRAGON Chapitre IV: The Middle Earth - Part Two CD

Terragon is an ambitious symphonic and avant-garde black metal project from France that continuously pushes the boundaries of storytelling within extreme music by dedicating multi-part conceptual chapters to literature and mythology. Following their previous explorations of classical poetry, the project dove deep into high fantasy with their 2024 full-length album, Chapitre IV: The Middle Earth - Part Two, released through the underground label Acid Vicious. This massive record serves as a dramatic sonic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, blending aggressive black metal blast beats and harsh vocals with cinematic orchestration, folk instrumentation, and grand choral arrangements to bring the vast landscapes and tragedies of Arda to life. The auditory journey begins with the epic, sprawling opening track Ainulindalë, which translates the mythical creation song of Tolkien's universe into a majestic blend of symphonic metal grandeur before transitioning into the heavier, stomping rhythms of Oliphant. The narrative then moves into iconic lore territory with the tense and complex structures of The Council of Elrond, followed by the deeply melancholic, folk-tinged strings of Lament for the Rohirrim, capturing the fading glory of the horse-lords. The pace shifts with the marching, rhythmic cadence of Long List of the Ents, leading directly into the frosty, oppressive black metal atmospheric weight of The Cold Hard Lands. The emotional and structural centerpiece of the record is the monumental, eleven-minute epic Song of Eärendil, a theatrical masterpiece that balances frantic extreme metal surges with ethereal, starry atmospheres. The second half of the album maintains this rich narrative focus, diving into the haunting, solemn progression of Where Now Are the Dúnedain and the oceanic, yearning melodies of To the Sea, to the Sea! the White Gulls Are Crying. A deceptive warmth is introduced with the folky, acoustic-driven undertones of Upon the Hearth the Fire Is Red, which quickly gives way to the battle-weary, tragic weight of Song of the Mounds of Mundburg. Finally, Terragon brings this grand fantasy odyssey to a triumphant yet grim conclusion with From Dark Dunharrow in the Dim Morning, sealing the chapter with a final wave of unyielding orchestral majesty and powerful black metal dissonance.
