TERRAGON Chapitre II: Baudelaire CD

Terragon is an avant-garde and symphonic black metal project hailing from France that masterfully bridges the worlds of extreme metal and classic French literature. In 2022, the project unveiled its ambitious full-length album titled Chapitre II: Baudelaire, released through the underground label Acid Vicious. The record serves as a dark, sonic adaptation of Charles Baudelaire’s legendary poetry collection Les Fleurs du Mal, translating the poet's themes of spleen, ideal beauty, decay, and existential dread into a complex tapestry of aggressive riffs, theatrical vocals, and dramatic orchestral arrangements. The monumental album begins its literary descent with Au lecteur, setting a grim, introductory tone that transitions into the sprawling, multi-part epic Un fantôme (Les ténèbres.. Le parfum.. Le cadre.. Le portrait...), which showcases the project's ability to balance ferocious black metal assaults with melancholic transitions. The haunting ticking rhythms of L'horloge offer a tense reflection on the passage of time before giving way to the chaotic intensity of La destruction and the morbid melodies of Les deux bonnes sœurs. The centerpiece of the album is the massive, twelve-minute Danse macabre, a theatrical masterpiece of skeletal rhythms and symphonic dread that anchors the record's narrative. The auditory journey continues with the brooding, sorrowful tones of L'ennemi and the suffocating atmosphere of Le gouffre, which naturally builds anticipation for the blasphemous grandeur and intense vocal delivery found in Les litanies de Satan. The final act of the record presents the aggressive, combative instrumentation of Duellum, followed by the agonizing, deeply sorrowful expressions of De Profundis Clamavi. Finally, Terragon brings this grand poetic odyssey to a close with the sweeping, eight-minute finale Moesta et Errabunda, sealing the album with a lingering sense of romantic melancholy and unyielding black metal majesty.
