The 2020 self-titled debut album by the Spanish band Strangulation, released via the Dutch label Dying Sun Records, is a massive and uncompromising work of Funeral Drone and Doom Metal. Formed in 2019 by two veterans of the Spanish underground—G. (known for Akoúphenom) and M.S. (involved with Arkaik Excruciation, Excurse, and Suspiral) the project was created to translate the concept of mass extermination into a physical wall of sonic pressure. The album is unique in its structure, consisting of a single, continuous 66-minute track that subjects the listener to a relentless barrage of dissonant riffs, repetitive atavistic percussion, and suffocating drone passages. Musically, the record is designed to be an endurance test, eschewing traditional song structures in favor of slow, ponderous movements that build a sense of dissociative terror. It draws heavy inspiration from the "ancient lore" of the genre, evoking the abyssal atmospheres of pioneer acts like Evoken, Thergothon, Abruptum, and Skepticism. The production emphasizes a dense, low-end sound where demented howling and guttural roars emerge from the thick layers of distorted guitar. Released as a professional digipak CD, this debut has been hailed as a pure manifestation of evil and existential dread, solidifying Strangulation’s position as one of the most extreme and experimental entities within the European funeral doom landscape.
