CROWN OF ASTERIA Sol CD
Crown of Asteria is a highly unique atmospheric black metal and neofolk project from the United States, envisioned as a solitary ritual of nature worship and spiritual exploration by multi-instrumentalist Meghan Wood. In 2014, the project delivered an expansive, earth-bound sonic journey with the album Sol, which was brought to the underground community through the specialized label Non Posse Mori Records. Seamlessly blending raw, cascading black metal textures with delicate acoustic folk, ambient drones, and organic field recordings, the monumental record stands as a deep sonic homage to changing seasons, ancestral totems, and cosmic cycles. The massive album initiates its spiritual descent with Stag Head: Wounded in Looming Spirit, setting an immediate tone of melancholic wilderness before shifting into the fluid, atmospheric waves of Tides Beneath Strawberry Moon. The project then introduces its first monolithic composition with Totem: Invocation of the Owl, a thirteen-minute epic that expertly balances aggressive, soaring black metal passages with deep, hypnotic ambient lulls. Listeners are guided further through the wheel of the year with the transitionary melodies of Seasons: Turning of the Year Wheel, which naturally flows into the radiant, driving energy of the title track, Sol. The second half of the record delves even deeper into long-form ritualistic structures, beginning with the defensive, cleansing atmospheres of Protection for Passage. This serves as a gateway to the album's final, colossal trio of songs, starting with the twelve-minute Crown of Oak Leaves and Wild Serpents: Aconite Tisane, a track weaving intricate folk layers with fierce vocal expressions. The cosmic fire burns brighter through the nearly fourteen-minute Vines in the Marrow, Bones in the Fire, which delivers relentless, frost-bitten tremolo picking and heavy emotional weight. Finally, Crown of Asteria brings this grand elemental odyssey to a close with Wandering, a staggering, seventeen-minute masterpiece of drifting, minimalist soundscapes and enduring natural majesty that leaves the listener fully immersed in the silent depths of the ancient forests.
