Hysterical Blindness is a raw and melodic black metal project hailing from Canada that channels themes of historical heritage, ancestral sorrow, and dark folklore. In 2022, the project solidified its presence in the underground extreme metal scene with the release of the full-length album titled Notre héritage, issued through the independent label Acid Vicious. The record seamlessly blends harsh, biting black metal aggression with poignant, melancholic melodies and acoustic passages, creating a stark atmospheric backdrop that reflects the cold, vast wilderness and historical roots of the Canadian landscapes. The eight-track record begins its grim journey with the title track, Héritage, which instantly thrusts the listener into a storm of blistering guitar work and passionate, piercing vocals. This aggressive momentum carries over directly into the shorter, relentless assault of Macabre, before shifting toward a more solemn and epic pacing with Liege Lord's Requiem. The absolute centerpiece of the album is the monumental, nine-minute epic Les racines noires, a track that masterfully weaves together furious blast beats, intricate melodic riffs, and tragic atmospheric lulls to capture the essence of the band's identity. The second half of the album maintains this compelling dynamic, opening with the brief, eerie acoustic interlude Witching Kind, which serves as a haunting bridge into the frost-bitten and triumphant sounds of Sous le vent des âges passés. The tension rises once again through the hostile and suffocating rhythms of Crawlers of Thoughts, exposing the listener to a raw sonic dread. Finally, Hysterical Blindness brings this historical and emotional odyssey to a powerful conclusion with Garden of Pains, a sprawling, seven-minute finale that leaves a lasting impression of cold despair, unyielding black metal majesty, and bitter nostalgia.
